Black Veterans for Social Justice Mourns the Passing of Esteemed Veteran Leader Herbert Shannon Jackson Sweat, Jr.

Brooklyn, NY — September 12, 2025— Black Veterans for Social Justice (BVSJ) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved colleague, mentor, and friend, Herbert Shannon Jackson Sweat, Jr., a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran and a tireless advocate for veterans and their families.

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1949, Mr. Sweat proudly served in the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, earning four Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and numerous other honors for his bravery and service. Following his honorable discharge in 1970, he continued a life of dedication—working with the U.S. Postal Service, NYC’s Highway Department, and later retiring from the New York Daily News.

For over 30 years, Mr. Sweat was a cornerstone of BVSJ, serving as Board Chairman, Employment Specialist, and mentor to countless veterans navigating life after service. Affectionately known as “Sweat,” he helped develop essential veteran programs, led the Veterans Action Group, and collaborated on projects such as Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods. A proud member of the Shinnecock Nation, he also worked to honor the legacy of Native American service members.

Mr. Sweat’s contributions extended across the veteran community through his leadership roles with the Veterans of the Vietnam War, NABVETS, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was widely recognized with proclamations and citations from local and national leaders, including New York City mayors and members of Congress.

“Herbert embodied our mission to serve every veteran with tender loving care and a listening ear,” said CEO Wendy McClinton. “His legacy will live on in the lives he changed and the community he built.”
