Veteran Housing NYC
On April 18, 1979, a band of veterans, from the battlefields of WWII and the jungles of Vietnam, embarked on a transformative journey that would reshape history...
Their Mission...
Their mission was born out of the collective recognition that for most of their comrades returning home from combat, there loomed widespread racism, absence of quality medical care, unemployment, and the daunting challenge of reintegrating into a society that often misunderstood their struggles and disregarded their sacrifices. Soldiers, who had once worn the uniform with pride, were now navigating a world that seemed both unfamiliar and unsupportive.
From these humble beginnings, BVSJ emerged not only as a veterans service organization but as a beacon of hope and a community fixture. It was about more than just addressing the invisible scars of combat or the deadly effects of the toxin Agent Orange, but about camaraderie and resilience. As the years passed, a new generation of veterans faced similar battles and BVSJ would be there to provide the resources, offering not only services but tender loving care and a listening ear.
For the last 45 years, Black Veterans for Social Justice has serviced thousands of veterans, their families, and the community. Although BVSJ was founded to assist the often marginalized black veteran, it has grown into one of the largest veterans organizations in the country offering programs and services to all veterans and the community, regardless of race, gender, or discharge status. And so, as the story continues, BVSJ will remain a steadfast presence, continuing to be a guiding light for veterans on their journey.
