Affordable Supportive Housing
Wazobia House is many things to many people. For the tenant, Wazobia is a conveniently located. newly constructed, affordable, furnished studio. It is a place to "live well" as part of a great community.
For some Wazobia tenants, the on-site availability of enhanced social services support means a new start on a stable lifestyle. Tenants can take advantage of the wellbeing enhancement, preventative health care, and health maintenance services provided by the social work staff.
For community members, Wazobia House is a substantial value added. This beautifully designed structure is complimentary to the streetscape. The community room offers tenants and neighbors an inviting socializing space to meet and share information.
Long Life Info & Referral Network (Long Life)
Long lif has served individuals and families with disabilities in Bedford-Stuyvesant for over 20 years. They found housing costs to be a serious threat to the independent living efforts of people living with disabilities. Wazobia House was their creation to impact that need.
Black Veterans for Social Justice (BVSJ)
For over 30 years BVSJ has advocated and served the multi-dimensional needs of Veterans and residents of the Bed-Stuy community. When Long Life needed an experienced partner to build Wazobia House, BVSJ took the reins and made the Long Life dream of affordable supportive housing come true.
Urban Architectural Initiatives (UAI)
Since 1996 UAI has with knowledge and sensitivity created practical designs to satisfy the complex needs of non-profit, for-profit, and government agencies. Their team guided Wazobia House from concept to concrete with tenacity and grace. The beautiful design and practical layout will provide tenants a lovely environment for many years to come.
New York City Department of Housing and Community Development (CHS)
The first steps are always the most important. No project can make a transition from dream to reality without that first step and vote of confidence. CSH was first to believe the Long Life vision for supported housing for people with special needs was viable. They provided the initial support that examined the feasibility and began the pre-development process ultimately leading to the building of Wazobia House.
National Equity Fund (NEF)
NEF is an affiliate of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC.) For over 20 years NEF has made high-impact tax-credit investments in affordable housing development. Wazobia House is one of their many projects. Their partnership with BVSJ brought investors and technical assistance to Wazobia House HDFC, allowing Wazobia HDFC to meet the financial obligations associated with developing 42 studio apartments.
